A member of Baringo County Assembly (MCA) has accused the government of doing little to assist residents of Baringo County who are reeling from the effects of drought currently being experienced in the ASAL areas.

Hon. Joseph Makilap of Barwessa ward in Baringo north Constituency said his constituents have lost over 700 cows in the last one month only to the biting drought and the government has not taken any action.

The KANU MCA told off the ruling coalition on management of the drought in the county as well as reluctance in construction of roads to carter for the needs of the people in the county.

Residents of his ward had walked for over hundred kilometers mid last year to protest the poor state of the Oinamoi-Kolowa road which the government had pledged to improve to bituminous sgtandards.

Makilap asked the governor Hon. Benjamin Cheboi to urgently call the president and his deputy to visit the country so as to address on the challenges which are being faced by Baringo county residents, “if you really fear to tell him, let me do it for you,” Makilap told Cheboi.

However Governor Benjamin Cheboi came the defense of the ruling regime urging the people to consider voting for Jubilee in the forthcoming general elections saying it has done much to improve living standards of the residents.

Makilap made these remarks during the launch of Boda Boda Ride to Safety Programme at Kabarnet town this afternoon.

The programme which is a joint venture between the County Government and Bartek Institute seeks to train over 3000 boda boda riders in the county on safety and life skills.

“In this first phase 600 youths, 100 from each sub-county will be trained on safety riding, security, HIV/AIDS and Drug Abuse,” said Youth and Gender Executive Mrs. Emily Kibet.

The Governor said he was touched by increased cases of accidents in the county where many were suffering or even lost lives in boda boda related accidents.

“The resources we are using to but medicine to treat accident related ailments can be used to do other development projects,” advised the governor.

The governor called on the youths to join saccos so that they can save and improve their living standards.
